WE WON A GOAT!!!
Played a football match against Nazareti FC yesterday, and won 2-1. The prize was a goat who we christened "Lucky Billy", and we'll be seeing him again at dinner-time. Apparently SPW always win this match. On Friday the girls had played netball, and we all made pom-poms out of flipchart paper and did some cheerleading (though we threw a Haka in as well and some football anthems - Great Escape, You'll Never Walk Alone, Match of the Day). Then the heavens opened with us losing 15-11 and it was abandoned, but not without a chorus of "Is this England in disguise?"
Spent this week in lessons with two women called Catherine and Farida, who "facilitated" our learning of issues relating to adolescence, STI's (HIV/AIDS in particular), gender inequality and life skills. All sorts
of cultural differences and myths cropped up in these sessions, and lots of pointless debates and arguments arose from simple misunderstandings (like the exact definition of the word "relationship" and whether
hugging is a type of "safer sex")
It sounds really silly, and it often felt a complete waste of time, but it was really important to make sure we went through all of the issues, even if some of them seemed really obvious to either the overseas or Tanzanian volunteers.
I've decided I can't possibly live without running while I'm here, because I'm getting too restless, so I'm gonna have to buy some running trainers and a couple more t-shirts - at the moment I'm just using my
big heavy, clumpy Saloman walking trainers.
Back on the anti-malarials now - weird dreams are back in force - been making movies and playing Wimbledon and all-sorts.
Can't think of much else - except I don't think I've mentioned before that round here the countryside looks like England - we're in the highlands and we have rolling hills, and lots of greenery so it's really no different to an English summer except it rains a lot more here.
Hope you're all well and write if you can (preferably by post!)
Phil :)
