Zanzibar 'bars' foreign workers

Zanzibar's MPs have passed a bill barring foreigners - including mainland Tanzanians - from working on the archipelago when locals can do the job - from the BBC

An interesting development indeed. Zanzibar is semi-autonomous under the 1964 Union, and every so often the issue of independence comes up. This year is election year too - the last two were marred by violence on Zanzibar, and Benjamin Mkapa has now served his two terms and will stand down as Tanzanian President.

Hopefully there won't be too much trouble, but I wouldn't stake my life on it.
